CPHP was founded in March 1986, as a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation. CPHP is governed by the Colorado Peer Assistance Act and is independent of other medical organizations and the state government. The Denver Medical Society, the Colorado Medical Society and Colorado Physicians Insurance Company (COPIC) were instrumental in establishing CPHP and continue their support of the program. A Board of Directors that is comprised of leaders in the medical community governs CPHP. Also view our Quick Fact Sheet for basics about the program.

How CPHP is Funded

Soon after CPHP was founded in 1986, the Colorado legislature passed the Colorado Peer Assistance Act to fund physicians and physician assistants (PAs) struggling with health problems. Just like today, the Act was designed to administer a minimal surcharge on Colorado practitioners’ medical license fees. Through the Colorado Peer Assistance Act, these fees pay for direct services provided by CPHP’s clinical team. “Direct” services include: Evaluation, Assessment, Treatment Referral, Monitoring and Client Support. This is why licensed Colorado physicians and PAs are able to access CPHP services at no cost.

However, CPHP’s “direct” services are not fully accounted for by the Peer Assistance Budget. Approximately 10-15% of revenue of CPHP’s annual budget is supplemented through donations by physicians, PAs, hospitals, healthcare systems, medical groups and societies along with a number of vested individuals and medical organizations in Colorado. These donations allow the CPHP clinical team to provide “direct” services not covered by Peer Assistance funding. CPHP also generates 10% from presentation fees, honorariums, and Training Program contracts.

Contributions remain critical for providing the breadth and depth of clinical services, but also for other indirect services and CPHP’s future.

Indirect services include essential statewide education and outreach presentations throughout the medical community.

Additionally, such support allows CPHP’s Research Committee to charge into new territory by determining precursors of practitioner health issues and determining the best ways to promote health and wellness. In fact, contributions from individuals and organizations alike have allowed CPHP’s Research Committee to publish numerous studies in a variety of specific journals.

Finally, ensuring that CPHP services will continue to be available to practitioners into the future is paramount. Donations will allow CPHP direct and indirect services to be sustainable for future practitioners. Those who contribute to CPHP do so through the program’s signature annual Spirit of Medicine campaign. Please click on “donate now” below to make a tax-deductible donation.
