Scott Humphreys, MD

Dr. Humphreys received his medical degree from the University of Oklahoma. He went on to train in General Psychiatry at Johns Hopkins Hospital where he served as Chief Resident. He came to Denver to train in Forensic Psychiatry through the University of Colorado Denver.

In addition to his work at CPHP, Dr. Humphreys is Senior Medical Director of Behavioral Health for Colorado Access. For almost 10 years he was an inpatient and consult liaison psychiatrist for the HealthOne system. He also has a small general and forensic outpatient practice.

Dr. Humphreys is board certified in General Psychiatry, Forensic Psychiatry, and Addiction Medicine.  He is a member of the Colorado Medical Society, American Medical Society, Colorado Psychiatric Society, American Society of Addiction Medicine, American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law, and is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.  Dr. Humphreys has given talks locally and nationally on a variety of topics in physician health including: forensic considerations in physician health programs, physician stress and burnout, disruptive behavior, medical marijuana, physician boundaries, opiate prescribing,  physician satisfaction with their experience in physician health programs, and autism in physicians.

Dr. Humphreys enjoys spending time with his family  and tries to take advantage of everything Colorado has to offer including summer and winter outdoor activities.  He sees it as a privilege and a great responsibility to work with the physicians in this state during some of their most trying times to help ensure their health and, subsequently, the health of their patients.

Doris C. Gundersen, MD

Dr. Doris Gundersen received a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Texas in 1981. She studied medicine at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in San Antonio, Texas. Upon graduation in 1989, she pursued residency training in psychiatry at the University of Colorado (CU), which was completed in 1993. She is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology with added qualifications in Forensic Psychiatry.

In 2000, Dr. Gundersen was invited to join the CPHP team and has remained dedicated to assisting physicians with serious illnesses and providing education to medical communities locally, nationally and internationally concerning physician health. She was CPHP’s Medical Director from 2009-2019, acting as Medical Director Emerita since. She has collaborated with her CPHP colleagues on physician health research and coauthored articles accepted for publication.

She currently is a member of the Colorado Medical Society’s committee on physician wellbeing and helped develop a wellness toolkit for all physicians in the state. Dr. Gundersen is a Past-President of the Federation of State Physician Health Programs (FSPHP) and received an Outstanding Achievement Award from the FSPHP in April 2013. More recently, Dr. Gundersen has provided education and consultation across the country pertaining to the legalization of marijuana and the implications for health care professionals.

Michael H. Gendel, MD

Dr. Gendel serves as the Medical Director Emeritus of CPHP as of July 1, 2009. Dr. Gendel served as Medical Director from 1999 to 2009 and served as Associate Medical Director between 1989 and 1999. He provides oversight of assessment, referral and monitoring functions to physicians with health concerns. In addition, Dr. Gendel is the past president of the Federation of State Physician Health Programs (FSPHP). He has authored several articles on physician stress and physician health and illness and has been an active speaker on these subjects throughout Colorado, nationally and internationally. He has chaired the Physician Health Research Planning Group, a national work group that promoted physician health research. He is a member and past chair of the FSPHP research committee.

Dr. Gendel received his undergraduate degree in philosophy from Brandeis University, his medical degree from the University of Kansas School of Medicine and completed a Special Fellowship in Pediatric Hematology-Oncology at the University of Kansas. Dr. Gendel trained in psychiatry at the University of Colorado Denver (UCD) where he has held an appointment as an Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry. He is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in psychiatry and addiction psychiatry and has been certified in forensic psychiatry and addiction medicine. He is a past president of the Colorado Psychiatric Society, a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and a founding member of the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry, of which he is a past president. Dr. Gendel works with a judicial health program for federal judges in the 10th Circuit and has served as a member of the Colorado Supreme Court Grievance Committee and of the Appellate Discipline Commission (for attorneys).

Mary Ellen Caiati, MD

Dr. Caiti received a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering and a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the University of Notre Dame, after which she worked for several years with emotionally disturbed children in the Seattle area.  After receiving her medical degree from the University of Washington, she completed her residency in Psychiatry at the University of Colorado Denver, where she served as a Chief Resident.

Dr. Caiti has provided clinical service in a variety of settings, including the University of Denver Student Health Center, the Infectious Disease Clinic at Denver Health, the Boulder Mental Health Center and, since 2000, in private practice in central Denver. She has also worked with veterans through the Headstrong program.  She is Board Certified in Psychiatry and has completed the Psychotherapy Training Program at the Psychoanalytic Institute, Denver. Dr. Caiati has served as Associate Medical Director at CPHP since 2004.  Dr. Caiati has served two terms as the Secretary for the Federation of State Physician Health Programs.

Laura F. Martin, MD

Dr. Laura F. Martin received a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from Duke University and her Medical degree from Wake Forest University School of Medicine. She pursued residency training in psychiatry at the University of Colorado and then a research fellowship at the Denver Veterans Medical Center. She was employed with University Of Colorado School of Medicine (UCSOM) full-time until joining CPHP in 2019. She is Board Certified in General Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine. She has published numerous peer-reviewed manuscripts in both general and addiction psychiatry. Her professional roles have included Medical Director positions at the Center for Dependence, Addiction and Rehabilitation (CeDAR), UCSOM Behavioral Health and Wellness Program and Valiant Living Addiction Treatment Center, as well as serving as the Associate Program Director of the General Psychiatry Residency Training Program at UCSOM and Program Director of the Addiction Medicine Fellowship at UCSOM. She has served as the President of the Colorado Society of Addiction Medicine and Co-chair for the Treatment Workgroup of the Colorado Consortium for Prescription Drug Abuse Prevention. As a reflection of her commitment to her work, she has been recognized as a member of the American College of Psychiatrists, a Fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine, and a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.

She is excited and honored to be able to synthesize her many prior work experiences in her role as an Associate Medical Director at CPHP and grateful to be able to serve the people and physicians of Colorado.

Sarah Early, PsyD

Sarah Early, PsyD has served as the Executive Director of the Colorado Physician Health Program (CPHP) since 2002. CPHP is a non-profit, independent peer assistance organization whose mission is to promote the health and well-being of physicians and physician assistants through evaluation, treatment referral, support, education and research. Dr. Early is responsible for the administration and management of corporate and program operations. She is proud to be contributing to CPHP’s work because healthy doctors give better care!

Dr. Early is a member of the American Psychological Association, Federation of State Physician Health Programs and the Society for Psychologists in Leadership.

Dazzle Africa is the non-profit charity about which Dr. Early is most passionate. She is a co-founder and former President of the Board of Directors of Dazzle Africa, whose mission is to partner with locally based organizations in Zambia to provide effective programs in education, conservation, and community development. Dazzle Africa creates sustainable ecosystems through safaris and local investment to ensure future generations are self-sufficient and iconic wildlife thrive. She enjoys sharing the beauty and magic of Africa by hosting philanthropic safaris for Dazzle Africa.

Dr. Early is originally from Rochester, New York. Her doctorate was received from Spalding University in Louisville, Kentucky. Currently, Dr. Early and her husband, Bryan, live in Thornton, Colorado. In her spare time, she enjoys participating in competitive swimming, skiing, hiking and travel.

Cae Allison, LCSW

Cae L. Allison, LCSW serves as the independent Clinical Quality Consultant for CPHP. She has worked with CPHP for over 20 years, first as a Clinician/Case Manager, then Director of Clinical Services. In 2011, she transitioned to her current role as Clinical Quality Consultant. Her background includes clinical counseling for terminally ill patients and their families in Hospice Care and for at-risk Adults in Adult Protective Services. She earned a Master’s Degree in Social Work from the University of Denver in 1995. Her Bachelor of Arts Degree was completed with a double major in Literature and Women’s Studies from Virginia Commonwealth University (three years) and University of Denver (final year) in 1993. Work/life balance includes reading, growing herbs and enjoying the beautiful mountains of Colorado with her husband. When not working, she can be found trying to keep up with the academic, professional and family endeavors of her three daughters’ families, which includes six grandchildren.

Catie Campbell

Catie Campbell is the Clinical Program Assistant for CPHP. Catie received her Bachelors of Science in Psychology from the University of Vermont in 2022, and will pursue a Master’s Degree in Social Work. Catie enjoys concerts, outdoor activities, and spending time with family and friends in her spare time.

Lori Crane, PhD

Lori Crane, PhD, MPH, contracts to provide guidance and support to CPHP’s research initiatives. Starting in 2023, Dr. Crane collaborates with CPHP on understanding physician health program outcomes and works with us to advance this effort.

In addition to her work in physician health, Dr. Crane is a professor in the Department of Community & Behavioral Health at the Colorado School of Public Health. She received her MPH and PhD in public health from UCLA, with an emphasis on behavioral science and health education. Dr. Crane is an expert in both skin cancer prevention and survey research. Dr. Crane is the author of multiple publications and presentations in these areas.

Carol Craft

Carol Craft is the Executive Assistant at CPHP. Carol is a proud Alumni from The Ohio State University, majoring in Art History. Her career has ranged from working as a travel consultant for 15 years, working with special needs students in a local school district, to supporting CPHP Executive Director and the entire organization.

Carol is most proud of her two children; her son is a graduate from University of Wyoming (UW) Law School and is an Estate and Trust Attorney, and her daughter graduated from UW in 2019 and works in the Agriculture industry.  Carol is happily married since 1991, and enjoys all sports, including mountain biking, hiking, all water sports (including long-distance swimming), cooking and reading.

Megan Curry, LSW

Megan Curry, MSW is a Clinician for CPHP. Megan received her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Maine in 2005. Megan was formally employed with CPHP in 2009 as the receptionist, before going on to earn her MSW at Metropolitan State University in 2018. Megan has worked in residential behavioral health, patient advocacy, and hospice, and most recently as an outpatient clinician for the Yukon Kuskokwim Health Corporation in Bethel Alaska, before returning to CPHP as Clinical Coordinator in 2021. Megan enjoys hiking and camping with her husband and three young children in her free time.

Joyce Davidson, LCSW

Joyce Davidson, LCSW, has been with CPHP since 2008, Compliance Coordinator, Clinician/Case Manager, and in January 2017 became the Director of Clinical Services. In her role as Director of Clinical Services, Joyce provides clinical supervision to all Master level Clinicians/Case Managers and manages the daily clinical operations of CPHP. This includes onsite quality and risk management and facilitating professional education. She provides oversight of the clinically acute cases and other administrative urgencies. She works in collaboration with Clinical Quality Consultant to develop and maintain quality control structures for clinical operations to include clinical policy and procedures and regular audits. Joyce is a member of the National Association of Social Work, Society of Psychologists in Leadership, and Federation of State Physician Health Programs. She is committed to serving the medical community of Colorado and is passionate about the health and wellbeing of our practicing and future physicians and physician assistants. She is currently pursuing her PhD in Industrial and Organizational Psychology.

Amanda Kimmel, MPA

Amanda Kimmel received her Bachelors Degree in International Business from the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque in 2006 and finished her Master’s Degree at the University of Colorado Denver in Public Administration with a concentration of Nonprofit Management in 2013. Amanda has been with CPHP since March of 2008, and currently serves as its Director of Public Affairs. Her responsibilities include accurate messaging to public constituents, community outreach endeavors, fundraising, donor relations and supervision of support and administrative personnel. Amanda serves on the Public Policy, Medical Student and Resident Committee, the Nominating Committee, the Program Planning Committees as well as Co-Chair of the Publications Committee for the Federation of State Physician Health Program (FSPHP). She is also a member of the Rocky Mountain Chapter of the Employee Assistance Professionals Association. Mrs. Kimmel has also served on the Colorado Coalition for Parity and the Leadership Advisory Council of the Colorado Nonprofit Association. In her free time, Mrs. Kimmel enjoys the outdoors of Colorado, running, concerts at Red Rocks and spending time with her husband, Stuart and sons, Ryland and Logan.

Quinn Montgomery, LPC

Quinn Montgomery, LPC, received a Master of Arts degree in Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling from the University of Iowa in 2017. He has experience working with individuals with disabilities in vocational settings as well as working in treatment settings for mental health concerns. Quinn joined the team at CPHP as a Clinician in May 2020. In his free time he enjoys the outdoors, crafting, and spending time with friends and family.

Annie Nowak received a Bachelor of Science in Journalism: Strategic Communications in 2019 and a Masters in International Human Rights in 2022 and after school she spent time in the Peace Corps as an English Literacy Specialist. Annie joined the team at CPHP as an Administrative Assistant in March 2023. Outside of the office Annie enjoys fostering kittens, traveling, and maintaining an active lifestyle.

Caroline Young, LPCC

Caroline Young, LPCC, joined Colorado Physician Health Program (CPHP) as a Clinician in 2022. Caroline graduated with a Master of Science from the University of Memphis Clinical Mental Health Counseling program. During her graduate education, Caroline completed her internship in community mental health, leading group therapy for children who experienced domestic violence and completing court-ordered assessments for domestic violence perpetrators. In her post-graduate career, Caroline has worked in inpatient mental health and served as the primary therapist in an Intensive Outpatient Program. Caroline is passionate about health and wellness and dedicated to helping others learn what emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being means to them. Caroline enjoys working as a Clinician with CPHP and making a difference in the lives of Colorado physicians and physician assistants.
